What is Aloha?
by Karen Shaff

In June 2002, George Kahumoku, Jr., Hawaiian Ki Ho'Alu Slack Key Guitar Master, performed a wonderful concert for our very first Aloha in the Redwoods. It was a fundraiser to help raise money for a new playground for our school. The playground was soon constructed from the ground up by the community of parents and teachers of La Honda Elementary School. People ~ all volunteers ~ brought their tractors, shovels and all kinds of tools, food, and refreshments on several scorching hot weekends to prepare the land and assemble the large purple climbing structure & swing set which now stands upon the "upper playground" at La Honda Elementary School. The day after Kahumoku's 2002 performance, he flew over to Maui and called me all the way in La Honda, California to thank ME for putting on such a wonderful event and making HIM feel so welcome and at home here. George loved the warm spirit of the community of La Honda, the generosity of the people, the wonderful food people had prepared for the luau and the wonderful connections he had made with community members at this event. "This is Aloha," he said!

Mahalo George!

La Honda Educational Foundation is at it again, bringing the Aloha spirit to La Honda to benefit our schools. We are currently seeking sponsorship, donations, and volunteers to help with this wonderful event. Sponsors will receive FREE advertising*, FREE tickets* to the event, and public acknowledgement on stage! (Privacy is kindly respected for anonymous donors & sponsors.)

*For sponsorship details & application click here or email aloha@karenshaff.com or call 650-747-9633.

All proceeds benefit the La Honda Educational Foundation. The Foundation is dedicated to raising funds for teacher salaries, classroom aides, educational enrichment, and the music program at La Honda Elementary School.

State budget cuts have forced the La Honda-Pescadero Unified School District to lay off two full time teachers and one part time teacher for the 2004-05 school year unless our educational foundations can raise at least $100,000. This is a difficult burden for our small rural district with few commercial enterprises to draw upon - we are grateful for our generous local community and surrounding neighbors who donate to our foundations and volunteer in classrooms or at fundraisers regularly. Your help allows us to maintain the small class size and excellent teaching environment found here in this unique, rural setting. La Honda Elementary School is very special; it has many highly educated parent volunteers assisting in the classrooms and on campus every day. The quality of education is important to us, no matter how small the district or how tight the budget, and we work hard to do whatever we need to do to preserve it!

What a great way to get to know your neighbors and Hawaiian Ohana (family), enjoy a beautiful summer afternoon among the redwoods with friends and family, sipping a cool drink and having a traditional Hawaiian meal while the sounds of the islands transport you to paradise ~ all the while knowing that you are helping the local schools maintain the high quality of education every parent wants for their children. Please mark your calendars and join us August 29, 2004 at 3:00 PM in La Honda Gardens for Aloha in the Redwoods 2004, on this fun-filled "Hawaiian Island of La Honda!"

PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN, and TELL YOUR FRIENDS & FAMILIES TOO

The La Honda Educational Foundation is seeking sponsorship and donations for this wonderful fundraising event, a benefit for the schools in the La Honda - Pescadero Unified School District. As the State of California continues to slash funding for education, parents, friends, and community members have joined together to keep our children's education a priority. The Foundation works to raise funds for teachers' salaries, classroom aides, educational enrichment programs and music programs that are no longer funded by the district.

This year our foundation needs to raise over $100,000 just to keep our teachers in place!

Please join us in our mission to educate the decision makers of the future - our children of today!!!
